Those were the first four comments that I heard from graduate students picking up TAP cards. Music to my ears.
When I was elected GPSS President, a tentative TAP card agreement was in place between GPSS and Metro with the program expected to launch in the fall of 2011. However, over summer, the contract negotiations between GPSS and LA Metro fell apart. This meant that the onus of re-negotiating a deal for graduate students would fall on my shoulders. Would the program continue under the new circumstances? Is this program worth it to graduate students?
My answer to both was yes. I knew that this program was extremely important to graduate students (especially those who wouldn't otherwise have access to discounted student passes) and I promised students I would do everything in my power to ensure that the program would happen.
So hearing students come into the GPSS office and tell me how grateful they are for the program has a huge impact on me. It has been and continues to be a great feeling to know that graduate students are so excited about the new program.
Many thanks to Jenny Novak, Lev Vanshelbaum from USC Transportation, Jakita Morgan (the office administrator for both the undergraduate and graduate student governments), and my fantastic GPSS Leadership team for all of the hard work and each of them put in to making this program a success.
So cheers graduate students! And enjoy the program!
