Coming from a country where a day/week and month a uniform weather condition, the capricious weather in LA has is really something that needs coping with. Today as I write this, its cold, a few days ago it was bright and warm, a few weeks before that for a whole day it rained. The biggest effect its having is on my wallet. The day it rained, I was so unprepared that apart from getting drenched, it also made me go hunting for a rain jacket. My anticipation of more rain in the following days was off target, since it hasn’t rained since! Instead it has just become really chilly, for which I bought a jacket from the USC bookstore! And the next couple of days were bright again! And now to really mess with me, it’s cool in the shade, and hot in the sunlight! So as I walk on campus between buildings, I am subjected to both, warmth and cold. But I have a jacket on, so I feel fine in the shade, and uncomfortable outside.
Another thing that is in stark contrast is the talking about the weather! It is an actual topic of conversation! Never in my 24 years at home have my fellow citizen and I- either when travelling to work, or even when in college- discussed the weather and said things like “oh! Today is a great day!” And yet, a few weeks of California weather and I am saying it myself!
California claims to have the best weather in the US, sure… I’d agree with that view… but its necessary to specify on which day.
